UNIVERSITY COLLEGE FALMOUTH STUDENT WINS PHOTOGRAPH PRIZE


University College Falmouth were delighted by the news that Torqil Bennett, studying BA (Hon’s) Photography, has won runner-up in the 2007 Ilford Student of the Year competition.

Joint Course Leader Tony Clancy at University College Falmouth said:

"Photography students at Falmouth have for many years been winning prizes in major national competitions. This tells the rest of the world what the staff team already know, that our students are among the most exciting and innovative image makers in the country"

ILFORD PHOTO claims to “lead the world in black-and-white photography and a reputation for supporting students of photography. Ilford Photo presented materials to the value of £850, which was gratefully received by Torquil Bennet. £500.00 worth of photographic materials will go directly to the University College Falmouth’s photography department.

Winning the Ilford Prize also earned Torquil Bennet the chance to work with top professional photographer Klaus Thymann. Having worked on assignments from Coca-Cola and Sony to the Red Cross and BMW Thymann is very well regarded within the industry. Speaking just after receiving his prize Torquil Bennet said:

"That was a tremendous experience,” “Klaus makes fantastic use of lighting, especially on the Canon campaign he was shooting while I joined him. He works like no other photographer with whom I have come into contact – his confidence level is amazing, and I learned a great deal from my time with him."
Torquil added:

“It was great to get some recognition”

Known as a champion of all his students Joint Course Leader Tony Clancy at University College Falmouth still reeling from their inclusion in the Times Good University Guide said:

"We celebrate all student successes (not just the prizes) and feel privileged to be working with the next generation of photographers."
